A note on how this book is written

Lakshya's claim is that every statement traces to a posting or to practitioner knowledge. For engineering fields this book's author has both. For sales craft — negotiation, running a close, carrying a number — there is posting data but not lived experience, so this book reports what employers ask for and stays out of coaching territory it cannot back. Where a claim is inference rather than evidence, it says so.

If you sell for a living and something here is wrong, that is worth more to this site than anything else you could send.

The measured picture

Named in postingsShareWhat it tells you
quota / target / bookings87%Nearly all of these roles carry a number. Ask whether it is individual or shared
pipeline / prospecting / outbound84%Self-generated pipeline is expected, not just inbound
enterprise / strategic account84%The corpus skews heavily enterprise rather than SMB
management / hiring / leading91%A seniority artefact — this sample is senior-weighted
AI or LLM77%Either selling AI products or using AI tooling. Read the responsibilities
technical56%More than half expect real product understanding, not a pitch deck
CRM tooling49%Salesforce, and increasingly Gong and Outreach, named explicitly
a named methodology19%MEDDIC, Challenger and similar are named far less than the training market implies
travel27%

Two findings worth acting on

  • Technical depth at 56% is the differentiator. More than half of these postings want someone who can hold a real product conversation. For anyone crossing over from an engineering or technical background, that is the door.
  • Named methodologies at 19% are much less load-bearing than the certification market suggests. Knowing MEDDIC will not distinguish you; being able to describe how you actually qualified and lost a specific deal will.

Compensation, and reading it correctly

Published US figures in this corpus run from roughly $83k at the tenth percentile to $180k median and $320k at the ninetieth — a far wider spread than any engineering field here, because these are frequently base-only figures against an on-target total that may be double. Always establish base, variable, the split, and whether the quota was hit by the team last year — the last one is the number that actually predicts your earnings and candidates routinely fail to ask it.
