Banking & Capital Markets Systems · Chapter 5 of 13

Treasury, FX, and the single counterparty underneath all of it

Why CCIL has no analogue in most engineers' mental model of markets, and why the vendor question matters less than you would think.

Treasury systems are where the vendor names are most famous and the sourcing is weakest. The durable content here is not which bank runs Murex — it is the market structure underneath every one of them, which is genuinely unlike anywhere else.

Its regulator is the Reserve Bank under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act 2007 — not the securities regulator. People get this wrongconstantly.
This is the fact to lead with in a treasury interview. The front end varies by bank; the clearing layer does not.

CCIL was set up in 2001 and recognised as a Qualified CCP in 2014. Its subsidiary Clearcorp runs the actual trading screens: NDS-OM for anonymous government-securities trading — owned by RBI, operated by Clearcorp — FX-Clear for USD-INR spot and swap, TREPS for triparty repo, a forex forward segment CCP-cleared with a trade-date guarantee since 2009, and OPTIX for USD-INR options, whose regulations took effect on 1 September 2025.

Note the regulator, because people get it wrong constantly: CCIL is supervised by the Reserve Bank under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, not by the securities regulator. If you say SEBI in an interview you will be corrected.

Why this changes the job

In most markets a bank's treasury platform integrates with several separate utilities under different owners with different message formats. In India, government securities, repo and increasingly FX and FX options funnel through one counterparty. So whatever front end a bank runs, the CCIL integration layer — file formats, margining, settlement files — is a fixed, shared component of every treasury implementation in the country.

Which makes CCIL experience portable between employers in a way that DTCC experience is not, because DTCC does not also clear your repo and your FX.

Finastra (Kondor, Summit)Treasury and capital marketsA small finance bank ran a full front-to-back Kondor implementation — the bank is never named
FISQuantum and Ambit⚠️ Do not conflate these. Quantum is a corporate treasury system used by company treasuries; Ambit is the bank-side platform. Different buyers

Not one Indian institution could be confirmed on Murex, Calypso, Kondor or Summit with a citation less than three years old.

That is not a research failure, it is the shape of the market: these deals are announced once and then vanish from the public record. A candidate should expect to learn the platform from the job description, not from public sourcing — and should treat anyone who states it confidently online as unreliable.

The same applies to GCC work. Deutsche, Barclays and UBS all run very large Mumbai and Pune centres — UBS alone has 15,000+ staff across Mumbai, Pune and Hyderabad — and the platform each supports is genuine tribal knowledge that does not surface publicly.

Who regulates CCIL?The Reserve Bank, under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act — not SEBI. This is a common and correctable mistake.
What does CCIL clear?Government securities (NDS-OM), USD-INR spot and swap (FX-Clear), triparty repo (TREPS), forex forwards, and USD-INR options (OPTIX, live since September 2025).
Why does the single-CCP structure matter? One integration layer — formats, margining, settlement — is shared by every treasury implementation in the country, which makes CCIL experience portable in a way DTCC experience is not.
What is the difference between FIS Quantum and Ambit?Quantum is a corporate treasury system for company treasuries; Ambit is the bank-side platform. Different products for different buyers, and they get conflated.
How should you find out what platform a treasury desk runs? From the job description. No Indian institution could be confirmed on Murex, Calypso, Kondor or Summit with a citation under three years old — these deals are announced once and go dark.
