Platform & Developer Experience
4 · Developer Experience & Productivity Engineer
Much discussed, much less hired. Read the volume note before committing to this as a search.
What the job actually is
You make other engineers faster. Build times, test flakiness, local environment setup, code review latency, the path from commit to production. The framing that defines the role is platform as a product: your users are internal, they can refuse to adopt what you build, and adoption is therefore your real metric.
Be clear-eyed about volume. This archetype is 10% of the family by term frequency and considerably less by dedicated title. It is a real and rewarding job, but a search targeting only DevEx roles will be slow.
Titles this hides behind
Prepare like this
- Bring a measured before-and-after. Build time from 22 minutes to 6, or CI flake rate from 8% to 0.5%. This archetype lives and dies on measurement, and an unmeasured improvement reads as a preference.
- Have an adoption story, including a failure. A tool you built that nobody used, and what you learned about internal customers who can say no.
- Know one build system deeply — Bazel, Nx, Turborepo, Gradle — and be able to explain caching and incrementality from first principles.
- Be able to argue the business case. Engineer-hours saved per week times loaded cost. This is how the role survives budget review, and interviewers at senior level are checking whether you can make the argument yourself.
Be ready for
- "How would you measure developer productivity without gaming it?" The defining question. Strong answers acknowledge that every proxy is gameable and pair a quantitative metric with qualitative survey data.
- "You built a tool. Nobody adopted it. Diagnose."
- "Justify your team's headcount to a CFO."
Red flags in the posting
DevEx that is internal helpdesk. If the responsibilities are dominated by supporting developers rather than building for them, the role is support with an engineering title. Ask what shipped last quarter.
No adoption metric anywhere. A DevEx team that does not measure adoption cannot demonstrate value and is first to be cut.

Themes, and where to learn them
These chapters are shared across every role that tests them, so preparation here compounds rather than being spent once.
